ARTIST: The Menzingers
ALBUM: On The Impossible Past
RELEASED: February 20 2012
PURCHASED: July 2012
FAVOURITE TRACK: Gates
As of now, the best album of 2012. The Menzingers are a band I’ve really fallen in love with these past few months. Their lyrics, especially on this album, really hit home for me and I find myself trying to emulate their writing style with the stuff I write. Each song has a heavy emotional attachments to that and it really comes through in the vocals, especially on Greg’s part. If you aint heard this record yet, go pick it up.
Album: ALL
Artist: The Descendents
Released: 1987
Purchased: July 2010
Favourite Track: Pep Talk
For the Greater Glory of ALL…..
One of my favourite albums. I might even like it more than Milo Goes to College. Don’t tell anyone though. This album is a great one to listen to if you’re feeling bummed out or down on yourself. Songs like Pep Talk and Coolidge really amp me up. I like being a Descendents fan cause I like to pretend it gives me “punk cred”. I saw them last summer and it was one of the best concerts I ever saw. Check ‘em out if you haven’t already.
ALBUM: London Calling
ARTIST: The Clash
RELEASED: December 14th 1979
PURCHASED: December 2011
FAVOURITE SONG: Wrong ‘Em Boyo
The jewel of my collection. I was gonna save this one for later but I figured now is as good a time as ever. London Calling is the best album of all time and one of my favourite albums. The Clash are the best band ever in my mind and good luck convincing me otherwise. Every song on here is magnificent. I can listen to it no matter what mood I’m in and it fits. I got this album from a family friend for Christmas. It was her original copy of the record. While I can’t say what pressing it is, I am confident it is an early one as she was an avid Clash fan. She also gave me a pin from one of their concerts in ‘79.
ALBUM: Chamberlain Waits
ARTIST: The Menzingers
REALEASED: April 13th 2010
PURCHASED: July 2011
FAVOURITE SONG: Tasker-Morris Station
This was an album that took me a long time to get into. I’d heard it once or twice before I bought it and liked it enough but it wasn’t until recently that I really started to get into it. Every track is so powerful and catchy. The Menzingers have slowly developed into one of my favourite bands. This record is really excellent. You should buy it.
ARTIST: Arcade Fire
ALBUM: Funeral
RELEASED: September 14th 2004
PURCHASED: November 2011
FAVOURITE SONG: Neighbourhood #1 (Tunnels)
Arcade Fire. One of the best bands playing today. Each one of their albums is superb for different reasons. This was the first album that got me to open up my tastes beyond just ska and punk and be more open to all genres. Absolutely one of my all time favourite records. I can put it on no matter what my mood is and feel wonderful afterwards. Arcade Fire is a band that reminds me of old friends and great memories and they’re a band I recommend to all who will listen.
ALBUM:Against Me! is Reinventing Axl Rose
ARTIST: Against Me!
RELEASED: March 2002
PURCHASED: July 2010
FAVOURITE SONG: Walking is Still Honest
Second album I ever bought. Either my second or third favourite album of all time. Definitely changed what I look for in music and in an album. Every song is so full of passion and power. Every time I listen to it I find something else to love about it. Against Me! is a band I got into at the insistence of a couple of my friends and to be honest first time I heard this album I didn’t much care for it but with time and listening it evolved in my mind into the masterpiece I consider it to be today.
ALBUM:American Slang
ARTIST: The Gaslight Anthem
RELEASED:JUNE 15 2010
PURCHASED: JUNE 2010
FAVOURITE SONG: Old Haunts
So we begin this series with the first album I ever owned. Well first one I ever owned on vinyl. The Shrek soundtrack was technically the first album I ever owned but I’m still looking for that one on vinyl. I bought it a few weeks after it’s release in June 2010 so as you can guess I haven’t been collecting for long. I remember being stoked for this record’s release because I loved Gaslight Anthem’s second effort, ‘59 Sound. And frankly this album didn’t disappoint. I may prefer it over ‘59 Sound, although I often flip-flop between them. Gaslight is for sure one of my favourite bands and I’m proud to have this be my first ever record.
